Bill Whitmire

Send us a text

Exploring six commonly misquoted Bible verses that are often taken out of context on social media, in sermons, and in everyday conversation. We examine what these verses actually mean when read in their proper context and why it matters for our spiritual growth.

• "Money is the root of all evil" is actually "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil" (1 Timothy 6:10)
• "God won't give you more than you can handle" isn't in the Bible at all; 1 Corinthians 10:13 refers to temptation, not suffering
• "All things work together for good" is conditional – it's specifically "for those who love God" (Romans 8:28)
• "Judge not lest ye be judged" is part of Matthew's teaching on judging rightly with humility and self-awareness
• "I can do all things through Christ" (Philippians 4:13) is about contentment in all circumstances, not success in worldly endeavors
• "For I know the plans I have for you" (Jeremiah 29:11) was addressed to Jewish exiles in Babylon, not a promise of individual success
